Where Has the Day Gone?

OK - this is a bit of a rant ... so look away now if you are of a nervous disposition! Right!  What happened to the word day?  All we hear these days in connection with 14th February is ... Valentines!  Now, should that be with an apostrophe or is it plural?

At first it seemed to be just an American thing, but all I've heard on UK tv and radio recently are sentences like -  "Treat your love this Valentines" ??????  (plural or apostrophe?)!!!  It is driving me mad.  New Year's Day is rapidly going the same way!

I assume that all this ranting means that I have officially become a grumpy old woman!!!!!

Love, Liz

I completely agree with you, drives me mad, as does people who say Cliff Richards instead of Cliff Richard. There is another one that bugs me too, but can I think of it now? Gah! x

Very sloppy grammar, I agree! Mind you, I can't be bothered getting het up about it; apostrophe misplacement, now that's another matter entirely... xxx

It's always annoyed me that "Saint" bit has been dropped too! Welcome to the grumpy old women's club :(

Sorry...sometimes I'm guilty of misplacing the "apostrophe".

I agree with you. It drives me nuts and I'm an American! You should live here. It's torture for a grammarian!

Poor St Valentine. He has nothing to do with it really. He was martyred on 14 February, yet we celebrate with saccharine, sickly cards and pointless gifts.
For the record Liz, it is St Valentine's Day.
Celebrate Lupercalia instead, which is what St Val's day replaced. It involves much drinking, the slaughter of animals and the flailing of young people with the raw skins. Now that would be fun to watch! Not?

Oops! Sorry Robyn - you are right! Was so annoyed about the missing day, I forgot about the missing Saint!

Totally agree! And with Robyn. Valentine the priest's mission was to marry couples secretly in defiance of Emperor Claudius's edict, but we 'celebrate' him in too such chocolate and huge commercial profit. The sending of cards is a proper way to remember him; he sent a letter to a lady friend who visited him in prison signing it 'from your Valentine'.

Worse still, and on the cashing-in front, it’s apparently Valentine’s WEEK! I’ve also heard that we can look forward to Paddy’s Week, which I’m assuming is to do with St Patrick’s Day. I haven’t heard anyone proffer St David’s WEEK (March 1st)....yet.
